Skimmers, forming the family Libellulidae, are of the largest family of dragonflies in the world. Species of this family are characterized by a notch on the posterior margin of the eyes and and a foot-shaped anal loop in the hindwing. Many of these species are brightly colored and prefer still water, like ponds or lakes.
